TACTICS

🧠 Building a custom GPT

GPT (noun): A tailored version of ChatGPT designed for specific tasks.

Anyone can make a GPT. We’re not kidding. For now, as long as you have ChatGPT Plus or Pro, you can build a GPT to help with specific tasks at home or work. It only takes a few minutes. No coding required.

1. Why it’s awesome

You already know ChatGPT is excellent at:

  • Summarizing

  • Generating copy

  • Following a set of clearly defined rules

What’s different with Custom GPTs? They remember everything you told them, even after you leave. Do you see the possibilities?

2. Real-life GPT use cases

Lenny Rachitsky asked X how they create and use custom GPTs for efficiency at work.

Here’s what people said:

That’s just five out of hundreds of examples shared.

3. How to create a GPT

There aren’t many steps here, because the creation is crazy easy.

  1. Sign up or sign in to ChatGPT.

  2. Click ‘Explore GPTs’ in the left-hand column.

  3. Click ‘Create’ in the top right corner.

  4. Tell the GPT builder what you want to make.

  5. Add a name and description.

  6. Tell the GPT how to complete tasks, like browsing the web or designing images.

  7. Select ‘Publish’ when you’re ready to use your GPT and share it with the world.

4. Configuring your GPT

The beauty of custom GPTs lies in their configurations.

This is how you make your GPT unique. Feed it whatever data it needs to learn, and it will. Think your brand’s guidelines, your ICP, your main segments… Or a set of step-by-step instructions.

⚠️Free and even Pro accounts can be limited in how much they can do with a single prompt. You might have to break up the process into multiple prompts.

Pro tip from Redditor @bettertagsweretaken: Just ask ChatGPT how it would help you do what you want to do:

5. Cool things people are doing with GPTs (& good reasons to build your own)

The best GPTs get specific. For example, a copywriter could create and configure a GPT that analyzes sales copy based on “The 4 Us” of persuasive copy (uniqueness, urgency, usefulness and ultra-specificity).

So let’s break down the key benefits of custom GPTs and look at some shining examples:

  1. Image Copy GPT. Reproduce images with a slight twist.

  1. Consensus GPT. Allows you to explore the world or scientific research with simple queries, and even write scientific articles. Don’t do that though.

  1. Automation Consultant (by Zapier). Helps you find ways to automate your company’s work.

  1. ContentShake AI (by Semrush). A GPT writer that can see what your competitors do and optimize everything for SEO. Powerful stuff.

6. Get inspired

It’s worth spending some time playing with other peoples’ bots. You might find one that almost ticks every box for you. Then, you can create something similar but, well, perfect.

Featured GPTs serves up the top 1% of custom GPTs for a variety of industries and purposes. That’s usually a handy starting point.

GIFT GUIDE

🎁 A Gift Guide for Marketers. So, Not Socks.

What do you get the person who’s always talking about conversion rates, re-brands, and Gary Vee?

Don’t sweat it — we made a list.

  1. A book: Even if it’s just to add to the bookcase they only bought to look impressive on Zoom calls. ‘Ogilvy on Advertising’ is a classic. ‘Traffic Secrets’ by Russel Brunson flies further under the radar, but covers the strategies to take a digital business from $0 to $100m.

  2. A content calendar: You can buy digital marketing calendars, or download one for free and pretend you bought it. Otherwise, most marketers are partial to an old-school whiteboard and markers.

  3. A stress ball: Marketers are almost always stressed. Buy the marketer in your life a stress ball, so they can stop grinding on those molars.

  4. Funny TikTok gifts: For anyone who sees themselves as a bit of an influencer.

  1. If they’ve got a pet: This adorable Paws Per Click pet bowl.

CULTURE

👹 Does Sony Really Own the “World’s Creepiest Patent?”

When word got out, the internet labeled Sony everything from “evil” to “satanic” to “insane” to… “brilliant”.

In 2009, Sony patented an advertising idea, stating TV viewers can only skip adverts by shouting the name of the brand.

We’re talking, screaming “McDonald’s!” to get the Big Mac off your screen.

Sony’s strange patent (Image credit: Sony)

Weird. Maybe even unbelievable. And some no-context photos circling social media had people claiming the whole thing was a dud.

But with a little digging, you can find details of that very patent. It exists.

Sony says it’s not a Black Mirror-esque concept to trap viewers in some commercial nightmare. No, no. It’s about turning TV commercials into an interactive gaming experience.

Mmh-hm.

We’re still not sure why the little guy in the sketch had to jump out of his seat and throw his arms in the air, though.
